Southend United’s pre-season friendly v West Ham United XI on Saturday 23 July (3pm kick off) will now be moved to a new venue, which will be confirmed in due course. The game had been originally scheduled to be played at Roots Hall but due to the inclement conditions of recent weeks the pitch at Southend has been delayed in its preparations for the new season.
Tickets for Southend United’s pre-season friendly against the Hammers X1 have been taken off sale until a new venue is identified. Any tickets already bought for the game can be refunded or exchanged for tickets for the game at the new venue.
The game will see Phil Brown’s side take on a West Ham United XI, predominately made up of the East-London side’s development squad.
Chief Executive Steve Kavanagh said:
“This has been a difficult call to make as the pitch is progressing well.
“However this fixture was always early in that growth cycle and the heavy down pours have created difficult conditions.
“We have re-seeded the pitch to assist and the experts are saying it will be ok for the West Ham game but we have taken the decision to allow a few more days for the grass to establish to try to ensure we have the best surface for the coming season.”
“We hope to be able to find an alternate venue as playing West Ham’s development squad has been a very useful and entertaining exercise in recent years.”
If supporters are unable to attend the rearranged game at its new venue once confirmed, they can claim for a refund by coming to the Blues Ticket Office at Roots Hall or by calling the Blues Box Office on 0844477077.
All refunds for this match must be claimed by Wednesday 20 July.

Southend United would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the change of venue for this fixture.
I can walk to the new venue, so will get there early to get perched in a nearby tree.

I was over there watching a couple of MATES playing for Rovers when they played some decent outfit in the early rounds of the FA Cup... Luther Blisset was the player manager IIRC?? Anyway about 500 tops I reckon.. and it was chaotic as you like that day... normally they get about 100 over there... fuck knows how they will cope with 1800... was toying about going as only a 10 min drive for me but realised got our football club p*ss up from 4pm... sorry but free booze wins
